Recommendations
Following a such a strict diet is not for everyone. Keeping within such tight boundaries has proven to be MY toughest challenge ever. However, time has proven that it is worth every ounce of determination invested.
The Boundaries
- No red meat, turkey or chicken.
Fish is OK.
If you decided to follow the diet rules originally founded by Dr Swank, chicken and turkey are allowed and after a year, you can enjoy 3 ounces of red meat once a month (ish).
However please note that these rules have been modified via Professor George Jelinek M.D. and are supported by his and many others amazing example. I have personally chosen to follow Professor Jelinek's modifications, even though the Swank treats would be nice, the rewards are even nicer.
- No dairy products, includes any cakes and bread etc. with dairy products found in the ingredients, watch out for Latic Acid and lactose which are hidden every where, I have even found Latic Acid in tablets!
- No processed foods containing saturated fat, nothing deep fried, no crisps, pies etc, nothing hydrogenated. Definitely NO vegetable oil, coconut oil (also present in some Vit D tablets) and palm oil (as above, check the ingredients)
- A maximum of 5 grams, ideally less, saturated fat per day.
- Unsaturated fat consumption should be maintained 15 to 45 grams per day. No more than 50 grams total fat per day.
- 1 tablespoon of flax oil in the morning and another at night (Omega 3)
- 1 Vit B supplement each morning
- If no fish is consumed through the day, 5 1200 mg fish oil tablets.
- If the sun was missed (less than 30 mins), look to take some Vit D-3 supplements.
- Care needs to be taken with refined sugars.
1 teaspoon of oil = 5 grams of fat!!! Sunflower, peanut and extra virgin olive oils are ok to use at a low temperatures and in small quantities (note measurement above). If you need to spread it further add a bit of water.
Please do not let these boundaries spook you, they can be easily overcome! Contact us and we'll be happy to answer any questions/concerns.
Diet-Friendly Brands/Products
I have chosen not to also follow the Best Bet Diet so I eat wheat. It is a personal choice. Identification of diet-friendly brands is only the beginning, care needs to be taken with the amount of saturated fats consumed on the following items, else benefits are lost.
This list is not exhaustive, still check the labels as manufacturers can (and do) change the ingredients used. When you find additional items, please let me know I will add them to this list.

Filippa Berio - Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Cooking and Salad Spray)
I wrote to Filippo Bero to ask them why the spray was restricted when compared to other products, here is their very honest reply. It's quality speaks for itself...
...I have to say that our spray is not as dispersed as competitor products this is a function
of viscosity as competitor products are diluted with approximately 40% water which makes the product less viscous and easier to spray out of the bottle or can. In addition competitor products have emulsifiers, alcohol, propellants and other additives which are necessary because water has been added to the product. We feel that having the product 100% olive oil with no additives is very important ensuring the product is 100% natural.
We have developed a special pump mechanism that we believe sprays our 100% olive oil product in an effective manner. It is important when using the product for the first time to press the button down very firmly a few times to activate the spray. Then after that you need to use a sweeping motion to coat the surface evenly. You need to be quite firm when you press the spray button, if you want to get a wider spray pattern you need to hold the spray a little further away from the surface you want to spray and spray with a sweeping motion. The closer you hold it to what ever you are spraying the narrower the spray will be.
I have to say that the product will never disperse a fine mist however other products that contain water, the water evaporates on heating.
Thank you for your time and bringing this to our attention and do let me have your address. Your website sounds very interesting well done.
I now use the bottle and mix it with half oil and half water and the distribution works brilliantly.

If you choose the NOT modified version, then ideally use Free Range Chicken & Turkey breasts (with skin, fat and red/white bits removed).
Fish (preferably oily fish), tofu and Quorn. Vegetables, I prefer the organic (where possible), fruit etc...
When stir frying use minimal oil (extra virgin olive oil, peanut etc - depending on the dish). There are now oil sprays which help reduce the amount of oil needed when cooking.
Most salad, fruit and veg is allowed, one restriction is avocado, I only eat a quarter each day maximum.
Studies show that coffee may, in fact, be good for MS! It was viewed otherwise earlier.
Rice Milk goes well with coffee.
Red Wine and tomatoes are excellent anti-oxidants. I'd probably try and stick to no more than two glasses of wine per day and have at least one or two day's a week off alcohol.

UK Vitamins:
Vit B - Effervescent Berocca tablet. Every morning I have one tablet (with water). If you do not like the taste, there are capsules that can be taken instead.
Vit D3 [1] - Vitamin D3, 5,000IU. If it does not look like I will get much (if any) sun during the day, I take the full dose in the morning , if it is sunny outside and I plan to be out in the sun, I will not take any tablets, choosing the more natural (and free) source of Vit D3. (We buy these tablets on line, cheaper, can send you a link).
Flax Seed Oil - Grano Vita Organic. One tablespoon in the morning and again in the evening, regardless. I find this brand tastes better when comparing other brands.
Fish Oil Capsules - Holland and Barrett EPA Fish Oil 1200mg. I am very careful taking these, as too much Omega can also prove harmful. I take 5 tablets in the evening if I have not eaten any fish (a decent serving)during the day. Otherwise I do not take any.
[1]: The msrc.co.uk website, there is a warning that Vit D3 should only be taken with calcium & magnesium supplements to prevent bone damage. (I get magnesium from the Berocca drink, mentioned above, and calcium from rice mil, tofu and veg)
However, based on recent evidence, Professor George Jelinek discourages calcium supplements.
It is a personal choice which path is taken.
It is very important to find a balance keeping those good fats up to maintain good energy levels.
